When people think about the arts, they often think of a night at the theater, a concert, an art gallery at a museum, or a community festival. While these experiences certainly provide enjoyment, the arts offer much more than entertainment. They strengthen communities, improve health and well-being, inspire creativity, and contribute significantly to the economy.

Here in the Dayton region, the arts play a vital role in shaping our community and improving the quality of life for residents and visitors.

1. The Arts Bring People Together

The arts have a unique ability to unite people from different backgrounds through shared experiences. Whether attending a concert at Levitt Pavilion, exploring exhibits at the Dayton Art Institute, or participating in a local festival, the arts create opportunities for connection and understanding.

According to a national study done in 2023, "72% of Americans believe the arts help unify communities regardless of age, race, or ethnicity, while 73% say the arts help them better understand other cultures" (Americans for the Arts, 2023).

2. The Arts Strengthen Dayton's Economy

The impact of the arts extends far beyond performance halls and galleries. The nonprofit arts industry in the Dayton region generates approximately $239.4 million in annual economic activity, supporting 4,490 jobs and generating $42.8 million in local, state, and government revenue (Arts & Economic Prosperity 6, 2022).

3. The Arts Drive Tourism and Revenue to Local Businesses

Visitors attending arts and cultural events also support surrounding businesses. Attendees at Dayton Region's nonprofit arts and culture events spend an average of $21.60 per person, per event. For visitors traveling from outside the region, that spending increases to nearly $33 per person. Every ticket purchased to a performance, museum, or arts event helps support restaurants, hotels, and small businesses throughout Dayton.

4. The Arts Improve Mental Health and Well-Being

Participation in the arts has long been associated with reduced stress, improved mood, and greater life satisfaction. Research by the University College London shows that engaging with the arts can help reduce anxiety and depression while providing opportunities for self-expression and emotional connection. "Just 30 minutes of active arts activities daily can combat the ill effects of isolation and loneliness," (University College London, 2021).

The arts have also shown to provide moments of joy and inspiration with national surveys finding that 81% of Americans view the arts as a positive experience during difficult times, while 73% say the arts provide pure pleasure and enjoyment (Americans for the Arts, 2023).

5. Engaging with the Arts Can Slow Biological Aging

Recent research from the University College London analyzed data from approximately 3,500 adults and found that people who regularly engaged with the arts (either by creating art themselves or by attending cultural arts activities) experienced 4% slower biological aging rates compared to those with little arts involvement.

According to the study, this reduction in biological aging was comparable to the benefits associated with physical activity (University College London, 2021). The findings suggest that participating in the arts may help support healthier aging by reducing stress, creating social connections, stimulating the mind, and encouraging emotional well-being.

6. The Arts Build Stronger Communities

Communities with vibrant arts scenes tend to experience higher levels of civic engagement, stronger social connections, and greater overall well-being.

Research from the University of Pennsylvania has found that neighborhoods with a strong concentration of arts organizations often experience increased social cohesion, improved child welfare outcomes, and reduced poverty rates. In Dayton, cultural art events help create the vibrant community that residents and visitors enjoy all year-round.
