Dayton, Ohio isn’t just the birthplace of aviation—it’s where creativity takes flight, too! If you think world-class art and performances only happen in big cities, let us gently (and artistically) prove you wrong. From stunning galleries to Broadway-caliber shows and orchestras that hit all the right notes, Dayton’s arts scene is thriving—and ready to surprise you. Let’s dive into the gems that make our arts scene absolutely unforgettable.

Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA): Three Arts, One Vision

In 2012, Dayton made history by merging its ballet, opera and philharmonic into the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance - a first-of-its-kind organization in the U.S. emulating the model of highly successful European performing arts organizations. Today, DPAA brings the Dayton Ballet, Dayton Opera, and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra together under one roof, offering an incredible mix of performances that range from timeless classics to bold new works.

Better yet? The Dayton Ballet is the SECOND OLDEST ballet company in the U.S. and nationally celebrated as "The Company of Premieres" for its commitment to producing and presenting new work. Catch the Nutcracker at the holidays, acoustically superior opera and world-class symphonic concerts - all while supporting the mission that the arts are for everyone. Whether you're an aficionado or a first-timer, DPAA makes the performing arts accessible, exciting and unforgettable.

The Schuster Center: A Pelli Masterpiece

Where do most of Dayton's performances take place? A world-class performing arts venue designed by legendary architect César Pelli, of course! Inside the Schuster Center, you'll find the 2,325-seat Winsupply Theatre, boasting state-of-the-art acoustics, dreamy sightlines, and a starry ceiling replicating the night sky from the Wright brothers' first flight in 1903. With three lobby levels and four seating levels, the space was designed to have no seat more than 120 feet from the stage. The diameter of the upper ellipse is 40 feet, the length of the wingspan of the Wright flyer. From the last row of the upper balcony to the center of the stage is 120 feet, approximately the distance the Wright Brothers flew that day in Kitty Hawk, N.C. Add the sleek Mathile black box theatre and the breathtaking six-story Wintergarden atrium, and you’ve got a venue that’s as much an experience as the performances it hosts.

So, you love Broadway? You don't have to head to New York to see the hottest shows. Dayton Live brings Tony-winning musicals, comedies and family favorites to the Schuster Center AND the historic Victoria Theatre. The Victoria Theatre originally opened in 1866 as the Turner Opera House where three years of success too place before a fire consumed the hall. After two years of rebuilding, it reopened as the Music Hall. Over the years, the name has changed, becoming the Grand Opera House in 1885, the Victoria Opera House in 1899 and finally the Victoria Theatre in 1902. Regardless, Hamilton, Wicked, The Lion King have all played here in Dayton, and more are on the way!

The 2025/2026 Broadway season starts in October. See what else is on stage at daytonlive.org
