Here are five must-visit spots where green thumbs and curious wanderers alike can stop and smell the roses! 🌹

cox arboretum

🌳 Cox Arboretum MetroPark

This place? Pure serenity. Cox Arboretum is 189 acres of tranquil beauty and natural education. Stroll through the butterfly house to learn about pollinator-friendly plants and maybe gain a few ideas to add to your own backyard. Supporting these winged creatures will make your garden and the environment healthier. Then explore unusual themed gardens like the rock and water garden. Ready for some panoramic views now? Climb 81 steps up the magical Tree Tower, constructed from a massive Douglas fir. This tower that rises 65 feet above the conifer collection will make you feel like you're in a treehouse for grown-ups. 😉 Whether you’re exploring the winding trails or meditating by the water, Cox Arboretum is a crown jewel in Dayton’s Five Rivers MetroParks system.

Woodland Magnolia Tree

🌼 Woodland Cemetery & Arboretum

Yes, it’s a cemetery – and yes, it’s absolutely worth your visit. The Woodland Cemetery & Arboretum is not only a peaceful resting place but also became a Level II Arboretum during the fall of 2017! It is among the green spaces in Ohio with over 200 acres and 3,000 trees, including ten current or former state champions. Woodland is a beautiful, reflective spot where Dayton’s history and nature intertwine in the most unexpected, lovely way. While more than 110,000 individuals have been laid to rest within its grounds, it serves as the final resting place for many of Dayton’s most prominent figures including the Wright Brothers, Paul Laurence Dunbar, James Cox, Erma Bombeck, and Charles Kettering. Don’t forget to stop at the “Look Out” to view the city from above!

Wegerzyn

🌷 Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark

Calling all garden nerds and sensory seekers! Start your visit in the formal gardens, where thoughtful landscaping meets eco-friendly maintenance techniques. Wander through creative displays of perennials and annuals, and you just might go home with a new favorite flower in mind. Bringing kids along? You have to check out the children’s discovery garden, a whimsical wonderland where little ones can explore themed gardens, learn about nature, and even cool off in a wading creek complete with a waterfall and cave. It’s designed for exploration and hands-on fun! And for those who like to dig a little deeper, Wegerzyn’s community gardens offer hundreds of 800 square-foot plots available from April to November – plus year-round organic options. It’s a fantastic way to grow your own food while connecting with fellow green thumbs in the community! Be sure to also check out the many hiking trails it offers as well!

Smith Gardens

🌺 Smith Gardens

Small but mighty, Smith Gardens, tucked away on a quiet corner in Oakwood, is often called a “hidden gem” – and with good reason. Once called “one of the finest tiny public gardens in Ohio” by Ohio Magazine, this less-than-an-acre space offers a peaceful retreat filled with colorful blooms, charming pathways, and fluttering butterflies. 🦋 It’s the kind of place that feels like a well-kept secret: intimate, elegant, and effortlessly calming. But don’t let the size fool you – Smith Gardens is big on charm and community connection. Throughout the summer, the space comes alive with blanket concerts and story hours, welcoming visitors to relax and enjoy the gardens in full bloom. Open to the public seven days a week during daylight hours, this is a picture-perfect spot for those dreamy “I can’t believe this is in the middle of town” moments.

Marie Aull Garden

🌿 Marie Aull Garden at Aullwood MetroPark

Step into a living work of art at the Marie Aull Garden, a serene 31-acre estate where nature and design exist in perfect harmony. Donated by Marie Aull—an iconic local conservationist and one of the driving forces behind Five Rivers MetroParks—this garden reflects a timeless blend of natural beauty and thoughtful craftsmanship. The Aull House and surrounding gardens showcase the Arts and Crafts style popular in early 20th-century America, with landscapes that feel as if they’ve grown straight out of the woodland backdrop. Since 1977, this peaceful retreat has welcomed visitors seeking inspiration, reflection, and a deeper connection to the land. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Marie Aull Garden remains a beloved sanctuary for garden lovers and history buffs alike.

🪴 Plan Your Garden Crawl

With gardens this beautiful (and this unexpected), Dayton proves again that there’s so much more here than meets the eye. Whether you’re exploring for relaxation, or just looking for your next picnic spot, Dayton’s gardens are serious about their blooms.
